Its proximity to the sea, extensive network of bicycle paths, and easily accessible excursion spots make the city an ideal location for a relaxing cycling holiday or active outdoor pursuits amidst nature. Furthermore, Kokkola is easily reached by both road and rail.
Here sea breezes, culture, cafés, and adventure come together in a way that is best experienced from the saddle of a bicycle. In this article, I share my top holiday tips for Kokkola, based on my personal favorite spots. While this piece focuses specifically on cycling, these locations also offer plenty to do for those exploring the city by other means.
Easy and Safe Cycling
Getting around Kokkola by bike is effortless and safe. The city boasts a comprehensive network of bicycle paths that connect the town center, various residential areas, and coastal destinations. These paths are often completely separated from vehicular traffic, making cycling a pleasant and safe experience, even for families. There is a wide variety of routes to choose from ranging from paved paths to off-road trails, catering to diverse interests and skill levels.

Diverse Scenery for Mountain Bikers
If you are looking for more speed and variety, Kokkola's mountain biking trails offer fantastic options.
For example:
- The Vattaja route leads through the sand dunes and past the birdwatching towers of Lohtaja, ending at the fishing village of Ohtakari.
- The Perhonjoki River outdoor trail runs through forest and river landscapes alongside the Perhonjoki River. A connecting trail leads from the Perhonjoki River route to Köykärinmäki.
- The Halkokari–Trullevi route combines seaside areas, forests, and beaches.
The trails are suitable for both beginners and experienced cyclists, with scenery ranging from coastal sand dunes and rocky shores to boulder fields and tranquil forests.

A Seaside Cycling Trip along the Seven Bridges Archipelago Road
One of the finest routes in the Kokkola area is the approximately 37-kilometer "Seven Bridges Archipelago Road" (Seitsemän sillan saaristotie) between Kokkola and Pietarsaari. This route winds through coastal terrain, offering a diverse range of scenery.
Along the way, be sure to check out spots such as Cafe Bryggan, Tyynelän Tontut (Tyynelä Elves), and Köpmanholmen island.
On the return journey from Pietarsaari to Kokkola, you can stop at Hickarö Resort to enjoy a sauna, the views, and a meal. Alternatively, you can take in the scenery of Lake Öjanjärvi from the water by renting equipment or joining a guided paddling excursion with Stilte.

Make time for a treat – cafés and terraces

Rain transforms the landscape. It softens outlines and colours, refreshes the air, and invites silence. Many stay indoors waiting for better weather, but for those who spend time in nature, rain can be a rewarding experience.
