What is classical massage?

Classical massage is one of the most well-known and widely studied forms of manual therapy. It is a manual soft tissue treatment aimed at relaxing muscles, relieving pain and stress, and improving circulation.

The roots of massage extend back thousands of years to places such as China, Egypt, and ancient Greece, where touch was used both for healing and maintaining the body. Modern Western classical massage is largely based on the system developed in the 19th century by the Swedish physician Per Henrik Ling, which is why the term "Swedish massage" is often used in English.

Classical massage consists of several different techniques, such as stroking, friction, kneading, tapping, and vibration. In many ways, the techniques sound much like they feel, and most massage styles are based on these methods or their variations. These techniques are combined individually according to the client's needs and the area being treated. The rhythm of the treatment can be slow and restorative or more intensive and releasing, often a balanced combination of both. Movements can be applied in different directions, and joint mobility may also be improved through stretching and mobilization techniques.

Physiologically, classical massage primarily affects blood circulation and the movement of lymphatic fluid, helping the body eliminate metabolic waste products. Increased circulation raises the temperature in the treated area and, together with manual manipulation, helps to relax tense muscle fibers. Muscle elasticity improves, pain may be reduced, and mobility can increase. At the same time, the parasympathetic nervous system is activated, allowing the body to shift into a state where recovery can occur.

Often massage is more than a physical treatment. It is a moment to pause and listen to your own body without demands.

At Stilte, classical massage is carried out with gentle presence. Each treatment is built on an individual encounter. It is not only about working with the muscles, but about holistic well-being.

Tension in the body is often a message. When it is listened to, it no longer needs to shout.
